Red-Tailed Hawks held the May meeting series in a hybrid fashion on May 13-14, 2022. On the Friday Zoom, RTH studied weight & balance and aircraft performance and presented an aural biography of a living legend – Louis Freeman. Lou Freeman was the first Black pilot hired by Southwest Airlines and later became the first Black chief pilot for a major US airline.
On Saturday, at Arlington Municipal Airport, MATA instructors gave students the opportunity to experience repair/maintenance tasks such as riveting and safety wiring and then examine the architecture of a Cessna 172 airplane. Joseph Fletcher guided the students through a weight and balance worksheet to compute the CG of an example aircraft with passengers and luggage for a planned flight to the San Juan Islands. RTH pilots capped the day by flying the students in a Piper Warrior II and Mooney M20.
