RTH @ 2025 OBAP Annual Conference. What a great opportunity to show off the great things that are happening in the Pacific Northwest. What a great way to plant seeds for the One Thousand – One Hundred Campaign. If you stopped by the Red-Tailed Hawks Flying Club booth, we say thank you. If you missed us, it is not too late to explore ways to get involved.

Now more than ever, RTH needs the support of our community. We are in need of $200,000 for the purchase and operation of two additional airplanes. In 2021, you helped us buy N13668 and N737KJ that are serving the RTH Aviation Academy well. Our operational needs now exceed the capacity of two airplanes.

The RTH Aviation Experience Brings STEM Joy to 50 Students. This annual 2-day experience, in June, introduced the world of aviation to Washington and Oregon students in grades 6-12. Friday was a virtual career panel and history lesson covering Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. Saturday was an in-person experience at Pearson Field, Vancouver, WA including rocketry, the fundamentals, discovery flights and exploration in Pearson Field Education Center. Many thanks to our partners Airways Science for Kids (ASK) and Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI).

The June Meeting Series @ Tacoma Narrows Airport.

The June Meeting Series @ Tacoma Narrows Airport. The Friday Zoom covered airport operations the accomplishments of South Korean astronaut Yi Soyeon and included multiple students reading their Continuing the Legacy in Aviation essays. We also highlighted RTH victory at Operation Skyhook. Saturday, we enjoyed the sun from the TIW Observation Deck, reviewed fundamentals of flight and discussed scholarship and summer job opportunities. RTH pilots capped the weekend with discovery flights for the students.

The RTH May 9-10 Meeting

The RTH May 9-10 Meeting Series was a successful kick-off of our fly-in season! The Friday Zoom was blessed with many students presenting their CTLA essays. We were riddled with glimpses of aviation history and insight into the motivations and aspirations of our student members. Saturday with the Washington State Patrol (WSP) was amazing! Our hosts opened their hangar doors, educated us on their mission, and made us feel at home. I saw many smiles, interaction, engagement, and learning throughout the day. The weather cooperated, and our pilots and ground crew operated safely and efficiently at Olympia Regional Airport, WA. The PHAK academics covered Aircraft Performance and Weight and Balance as planned. The history lesson covered Willa B. Brown.

The Red-Tailed Hawks focused on the Business of Aviation during the March 14-15 meeting series

The Red-Tailed Hawks focused on the Business of Aviation during the March 14-15 meeting series. Friday was held via Zoom and Saturday was hosted by Signature Aviation (KBFI).

On Friday, David Ruiz, owner of Pegasus Aviation presented his aviation story and path to becoming a business owner. Afterwards, we presented the PHAK lesson covering Flight Instruments. Next, the history lesson was a well-researched presentation on Lieutenant Commander La’Shanda Holmes the first Black female helicopter pilot for the US Coast Guard. We finished the meeting with two students presenting their business plans.

Saturday morning kicked off with a discussion about business plans and the students breaking into their flight groups to develop and present a business idea to the rest of the attendees. Afterwards, the students built upon their flight instruments knowledge in discussion and Ishitha Arekapudi, one of our private pilot qualified student members, shared about her experience in writing Cleared for Takeoff, a guide to help people access opportunities in aviation.

Forty Students were divided into small groups and received a tour of the Signature Aviation facilities and operations and Frank Madison and Kylie Giffin from Pacific Northwest Business Aviation Associate (PNBAA) paired lead a Q&A session to discuss their career as well as the purpose, scholarships, and internships available from PNBAA.

After a healthy lunch, we wrapped up the day with the students gathering to hear from the Artemis ROADS III team about their latest mission objective to design rovers to explore lava tubes on the Moon and to witness a demonstration of the rovers.

Red-Tailed Hawks Meet in the DMV! Over the years, RTH members have migrated to the East Coast and a significant number have landed in DC, MD, and VA (DMV). Therefore, we gather once a year around the Valintine weekend to spread the love, enjoy aviation comradery and bowl. This year, 32 persons connected on Saturday, February 15th to promote the August BPA national meeting in VA, to share the vision for a Flight Lessons for Youth (FLY) Maryland program, and to garner support for the Jasper Harris, Jr. Aviation Scholarship.

August 22-24, the Newport News, VA chapter of BPA will host the National Meeting. Make plans to attend. Details, when available, will be posted on www.bpapilots.org. Join a chapter today!

In partnership with Plane Life LLC, FLY Maryland is envisioned to expand the efforts of the Red-Tailed Hawks FLY and the BPA Summer Flight Academy and operate in August annually.

Jasper Harris, Jr was an Electrical Engineering graduate of Howard University and one of the first black engineers hired by the Boeing Company in the 1951. The RTH Meeting Series January 24-25, 2025

The RTH Meeting Series January 24-25, 2025, was held in a hybrid with the Friday Zoom and Saturday experience with our partner Pacific Science Center. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about business aviation, airplane design, testing and kick off the Artemis ROADS III challenge. We also paused to focus on mental health.

Friday, Karlton Mitchell started us off with the Pilot Talk, sharing his background as a P-8 pilot and his new role as the first officer for KaiserAir. The PHAK lessons on Flight Controls and Aircraft Systems and academics concluded with the history of Ulysses L. “Rip” Gooch – pilot, businessman, aviation industry leader, politician, and author of Black Horizons.

Saturday, author Tanvi Arekapudi made a formal presentation on mental health and handed out copies of her publications. Dan Hrehov, Flight Test Academy, reinforced flight control knowledge through academic exercises and activities. Afterward, members experienced the PacSci exhibits/activities and the Planetarium.

Two middle school students read research papers related to the NASA Artemis missions as a start to the Artemis ROADS III challenge. RTH is a Northwest Earth and Space Sciences Pathways (NESSP) partner.

Thank you, Galvin Flying! You have been with us from the beginning of the Red-Tailed Hawks Flying Club, BPA. The very weekend we celebrated eleven years of operation, you closed your doors after 94 years of aviation services. The Galvin Flying team has been awesome, and the partnership will be missed.

Thank you for always being willing to support the RTH Youth Program even on the shortest of notifications. Thank you for being a partner for Red-Tailed Hawks FLY 2019-2024. Thank you for providing marketing and maintenance for the Red-Tailed Hawks Aviation Academy, Inc. airplanes. The RTH Youth Program explored Aircraft Construction and Airfield Operations

The RTH Youth Program explored Aircraft Construction and Airfield Operations in the November meeting series. The Friday Zoom included a pilot talk by Orion Collins, the Aircraft Construction lesson by Jesse Hayes and CTLA essay and PHAK show and tell opportunities by student members making progress in their workbooks.

On Saturday, we were hosted by Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The history lesson presented Katherine Johnson, and the B-17 model airplane construction exercise exposed students to the manufacturing processes. The mentoring flights competed to see who could build quality products the fastest. Later the students learned about SEA airport operations. They toured the field, visited Fire & Rescue and learned about wildlife management.

Over 80 Red-Tailed Hawks enjoyed the October 11-12, 2024 RTH Meeting Series.

Over 80 Red-Tailed Hawks enjoyed the October 11-12, 2024 RTH Meeting Series. The Friday Zoom started off with a presentation from Luanne Wills-Merrell, Chicago Flight Standards District Office Manager. Then, we covered history of the Federal Aviation Administration, and finished with the Introduction to Flying lesson. On Saturday, we visited Paine Field, WA (KPAE). The students rotated between touring the PAE Fire Station, touring Aviation Technical Services (ATS), and PHAK activity in the classroom. After lunch, students and adults toured the Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Museum.
