The Red-Tailed Hawks focused on the Business of Aviation during the March 14-15 meeting series. Friday was held via Zoom and Saturday was hosted by Signature Aviation (KBFI).

On Friday, David Ruiz, owner of Pegasus Aviation presented his aviation story and path to becoming a business owner. Afterwards, we presented the PHAK lesson covering Flight Instruments. Next, the history lesson was a well-researched presentation on Lieutenant Commander La’Shanda Holmes the first Black female helicopter pilot for the US Coast Guard. We finished the meeting with two students presenting their business plans.

Saturday morning kicked off with a discussion about business plans and the students breaking into their flight groups to develop and present a business idea to the rest of the attendees. Afterwards, the students built upon their flight instruments knowledge in discussion and Ishitha Arekapudi, one of our private pilot qualified student members, shared about her experience in writing Cleared for Takeoff, a guide to help people access opportunities in aviation.

Forty Students were divided into small groups and received a tour of the Signature Aviation facilities and operations and Frank Madison and Kylie Giffin from Pacific Northwest Business Aviation Associate (PNBAA) paired lead a Q&A session to discuss their career as well as the purpose, scholarships, and internships available from PNBAA.

After a healthy lunch, we wrapped up the day with the students gathering to hear from the Artemis ROADS III team about their latest mission objective to design rovers to explore lava tubes on the Moon and to witness a demonstration of the rovers.

The RTH February 21-22 Meeting Series served over 70 people. Friday was held via Zoom, and De Marco Best hosted Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Flight Training Center, WA.

Friday Zoom: David Benton III, CP, IR, facilitated the meeting and presented the Pilot Talk, focusing on his experience and lessons learned in college and earning his private pilot license. The PHAK lesson covered airspace and navigation. The meeting concluded with discussing different STEM careers in preparation for the history lesson.

Saturday at Alaska Airlines: We started with a tour of the facilities. Next, everyone watched a NASA film, Connecting the Underground Railroad to STEM, and then we connected the UR directly to aviation in terms of communication, navigation, and weight and balance.

Afterward, the students were pulled out in small groups to experience landing a Boeing 737 simulator. During this period, 40 students not in the simulator reviewed airspace and navigation and participated in a navigation exercise using sectional charts, plotters, and E6-B flight computers to plan a cross-country flight.

Afterward, they led 40 students in describing the Artemis ROADS III challenge and activity to build three prototype water filters for testing.

Red-Tailed Hawks Meet in the DMV! Over the years, RTH members have migrated to the East Coast and a significant number have landed in DC, MD, and VA (DMV). Therefore, we gather once a year around the Valintine weekend to spread the love, enjoy aviation comradery and bowl. This year, 32 persons connected on Saturday, February 15th to promote the August BPA national meeting in VA, to share the vision for a Flight Lessons for Youth (FLY) Maryland program, and to garner support for the Jasper Harris, Jr. Aviation Scholarship.

August 22-24, the Newport News, VA chapter of BPA will host the National Meeting. Make plans to attend. Details, when available, will be posted on www.bpapilots.org. Join a chapter today!

In partnership with Plane Life LLC, FLY Maryland is envisioned to expand the efforts of the Red-Tailed Hawks FLY and the BPA Summer Flight Academy and operate in August annually.

Jasper Harris, Jr was an Electrical Engineering graduate of Howard University and one of the first black engineers hired by the Boeing Company in the 1951. The RTH Meeting Series January 24-25, 2025

The RTH Meeting Series January 24-25, 2025, was held in a hybrid with the Friday Zoom and Saturday experience with our partner Pacific Science Center. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about business aviation, airplane design, testing and kick off the Artemis ROADS III challenge. We also paused to focus on mental health.

Friday, Karlton Mitchell started us off with the Pilot Talk, sharing his background as a P-8 pilot and his new role as the first officer for KaiserAir. The PHAK lessons on Flight Controls and Aircraft Systems and academics concluded with the history of Ulysses L. “Rip” Gooch – pilot, businessman, aviation industry leader, politician, and author of Black Horizons.

Saturday, author Tanvi Arekapudi made a formal presentation on mental health and handed out copies of her publications. Dan Hrehov, Flight Test Academy, reinforced flight control knowledge through academic exercises and activities. Afterward, members experienced the PacSci exhibits/activities and the Planetarium.

Two middle school students read research papers related to the NASA Artemis missions as a start to the Artemis ROADS III challenge. RTH is a Northwest Earth and Space Sciences Pathways (NESSP) partner.

Over 80 Red-Tailed Hawks enjoyed the October 11-12, 2024 RTH Meeting Series. The Friday Zoom started off with a presentation from Luanne Wills-Merrell, Chicago Flight Standards District Office Manager. Then, we covered history of the Federal Aviation Administration, and finished with the Introduction to Flying lesson. On Saturday, we visited Paine Field, WA (KPAE). The students rotated between touring the PAE Fire Station, touring Aviation Technical Services (ATS), and PHAK activity in the classroom. After lunch, students and adults toured the Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Museum.

RTH held the September Meeting Series this weekend. Forty-two participants signed into the Friday Zoom and over sixty folks participated on Saturday, at Arlington Municipal Airport (AWO). Hats off to Mission Aviation Training Academy (MATA) for opening their hangar to the RTH Youth Program.

Friday began with John Miller, Puget Sound Soaring Association, introducing glider flying to the audience. Ishitha Arekapudi shared her experience as a glider rated private pilot and then presented a fantastic history lesson covering the accomplishments of our Future Thrust Awards namesakes: Leslie A. Morris, Leroy Roberts. Jr. and Walt W. Braithwaite. Axel Scales, private pilot, presented the PHAK lesson on Weather Theory. The Zoom closed with four students reading their Continuing the Legacy in Aviation essays.

Saturday began by covering the PHAK lesson on Weather Services. Next, the students split into groups to experience the Weather Theory activity and the MATA team. The MATA activities included an overview of their mission and operations, a torque station, a rivet station, an annealing station and an airplane preflight station.

CTLA Essay Writers Soar! A requirement of the RTH Youth Program is write a two-part Continuing the Legacy in Aviation (CTLA) essay. Part one is about a person of aerospace historical significance. Part two is about the student’s own aerospace aspirations. The CTLA essay finalists get to participate in the RTH Glider Project and fly with our partner the Puget Sound Soaring Association (PSSA). The 2024 finalists: Ruby, Jashua, Reeshabh, and Noel flew yesterday. Congratulations!

A Labor of Love! During this celebration of Labor Day weekend, I pause to thank our members for their service to our communities and perpetuating the mission of the Red-Tailed Hawks Flying Club, BPA. I am forever grateful for the nearly eleven years of sweat equity they have poured into the year-around RTH Youth Program and developing our three camps, ROADS teams and flight training. Through outreach, mentoring, coaching and instruction they have engaged, exposed, educated and empowered thousands of youths. Every day with the Red-Tailed Hawks is “Aviation Day”. RTH Aerospace Science Camp Closed with a Blast!

RTH Aerospace Science Camp Closed with a Blast! Friday included thinking like a scientist, problem solving like an engineer, Earth as a system, airplane as a system, Newton’s laws of motion, forces on an airplane, conservation of energy and momentum, and introduction to drones. Saturday began with programming drones, designing and building tin boats, and learning about electrical circuits. Then, scholars continued to design and build robots, learn about structures, design and build contraptions to protect a falling egg, collect projectile motion data on stomp rockets, design and launch paper rockets, and learn about orbital mechanics. Sunday, the teams discussed ethics in engineering and built and launched solid-fuel model rockets. Thank you, NESSP and Rainier Vista Boys and Girls Club!

The 2024 RTH Aviation Day Camp

The 2024 RTH Aviation Day Camp is in the history books! On the weekend of 26-27 July, 60 students were invited to enjoy the world of aviation. On Friday, they were treated to an online introduction to an airline transport pilot, a career panel and the history of the Tuskegee Airmen. On Saturday, the students learned about airplane parts, the fundamentals of flight, and aircraft systems from Red-Tailed Hawks FLY Cadets. Then they rotated between a scavenger hunt in the Museum of Flight, experiencing the Aerospace Education Center, and flying with Red-Tailed Hawks Pilots. Afterward, they witnessed the Red-Tailed Hawks FLY Cadet’s graduation and were invited to join a Rover Observation and Discoveries in Space (ROADS) team.
